MK-Ultra: Origins, Objectives, and Lasting Controversy
Project MK-Ultra was a highly secret CIA research program officially launched in 1953 during the height of the Cold War. It evolved from earlier projects such as Bluebird and Artichoke, driven by fears that the Soviet Union, China, and North Korea had developed effective “brainwashing” techniques.
The CIA sought to determine whether human behaviour could be controlled, memories altered, or individuals manipulated for espionage, interrogation, and covert operations.

The program investigated a wide range of techniques, including the administration of LSD and other psychoactive drugs, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, electroshock, sleep deprivation, isolation, and psychological conditioning.
Hypnosis was of particular interest, with researchers exploring whether it could induce amnesia, implant suggestions, or compel subjects to carry out actions against their will.
Many of these experiments were conducted without the informed consent of participants, including hospital patients, prisoners, military personnel, and ordinary civilians.
One figure frequently associated with the era is George Estabrooks, a psychologist who openly argued that hypnosis could create “split personalities” for intelligence purposes.
Although he was not publicly identified as running MK-Ultra itself, his work on military hypnosis and his claims about hypnotically created dual identities have made him a recurring figure in discussions surrounding Cold War mind-control research.
Officially, MK-Ultra failed to produce a reliable method of mind control. However, the program left behind a record of serious ethical abuses and human rights violations.
Public investigations in the 1970s revealed that many records had been deliberately destroyed on the orders of CIA Director Richard Helms, leaving historians with an incomplete picture of the program’s true scope.
The destruction of records has fuelled decades of speculation that aspects of MK-Ultra may have continued under different names or evolved into classified behavioural research programs.
To date, no publicly available evidence has demonstrated that MK-Ultra itself continued after its official termination in 1973.
Nevertheless, the absence of complete documentation has ensured that questions remain, and the subject continues to attract public interest and debate.
That debate has been renewed this week following hearings held by the U.S. House Oversight Committee’s Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets, titled
Mind Control and Accountability: Uncovering the Truth of the CIA’s MKULTRA Project.
Witnesses argued that the historical record remains incomplete because of destroyed files and continuing redactions, while some suggested Congress was never given the full account of what the program achieved.
The hearings have revived calls for further declassification and greater transparency, although they did not present conclusive evidence that an MK-Ultra-style program continues to operate today.
Psychological Operations, Influence, and the Legacy of Tavistock
The Tavistock Clinic (often mistakenly referred to as “The Tavistock Hospital”) in London was established in 1920 as a centre for psychological treatment and research. During and after the Second World War, its clinicians developed influential ideas in psychiatry, group dynamics, trauma, and organisational behaviour.
A separate organisation (according to the powers that be) called the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, was established in 1947 to apply social science research to organisations, government, and industry.
Although the two institutions share historical roots and some personnel, they have always been separate organisations with different functions.
The official narrative is that claims that the Tavistock Clinic or Tavistock Institute directly participated in the CIA’s MK-Ultra programme remain unproven.
Historians acknowledge that British and American intelligence agencies exchanged knowledge on psychology, interrogation, and human behaviour during the Cold War, but no declassified evidence has (as yet) demonstrated that Tavistock itself was an operational component of MK-Ultra.
Nevertheless, Tavistock’s pioneering work on group psychology, leadership, and social systems has had a profound influence on modern behavioural science.
Today, the Tavistock Institute is based in London, while the British Psychological Society also occupies offices in central London. Their proximity has sometimes fuelled speculation about institutional links, but they are (so we are told) independent organisations with different roles and governance.
The broader field of behavioural science has since become embedded within government. One prominent example is the Behavioural Insights Team, often referred to as the “Nudge Unit”, originally established by the UK Government in 2010.
Drawing upon behavioural economics and psychology, it develops policies intended to influence decision-making through subtle changes in the way choices are presented—a concept known as “nudging”.
While supporters argue these methods improve public policy and outcomes, critics contend they can blur the line between persuasion and manipulation.
Public concern over psychological influence intensified following revelations surrounding Cambridge Analytica.
The company harvested personal data from millions of Facebook users and used sophisticated psychographic profiling to target political advertising during election campaigns and referendums.
The episode highlighted how behavioural science, large-scale data collection, and digital technology could be combined to shape public opinion on an unprecedented scale.
The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office concluded that the company’s practices raised serious concerns about privacy, transparency, and democratic accountability.
Military organisations have also recognised the growing importance of influence operations. The British Army’s 77th Brigade, formed in 2015 and based at Denison Barracks in Berkshire, brings together specialists in information activities, open-source intelligence, media operations, and psychological operations.
According to the Ministry of Defence, its role is to support military objectives by understanding audiences, countering disinformation, and influencing behaviour in conflict and security environments.
While its activities are officially directed at overseas operations and adversaries, its existence illustrates how information and psychology have become recognised as strategic domains alongside land, sea, air, cyber, and space.
Taken together, these developments demonstrate that psychological influence is no longer confined to intelligence agencies or wartime propaganda.
From government policy and military doctrine to commercial marketing and political campaigning, behavioural science now plays an increasingly significant role in shaping how information is presented, perceived, and acted upon.
The extent to which these techniques constitute legitimate persuasion or undue psychological manipulation remains the subject of continuing public, academic, and political debate.

Derren Brown’s The Assassin: Exploring the Limits of Psychological Influence
In 2011, illusionist and psychological entertainer Derren Brown presented The Assassin, one of the most controversial episodes of his television series The Experiments.
The programme set out to examine a question that has fascinated psychologists, intelligence researchers, and conspiracy theorists alike: could an ordinary, law-abiding person be psychologically manipulated into attempting to assassinate another human being?
The inspiration for the experiment came in part from longstanding debates surrounding the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy and the claims made by Sirhan Sirhan that he had little or no conscious recollection of the shooting.
Brown did not attempt to prove those claims, but instead explored whether psychological techniques could produce behaviour that appeared similarly automatic or detached from conscious decision-making.
After screening a number of volunteers, Brown selected one participant who underwent weeks of carefully designed psychological conditioning.
Using a combination of hypnosis, suggestion, repetition, and behavioural training, the participant was gradually guided into responding to specific triggers while remaining unaware of the full purpose of the experiment.
Throughout the programme, Brown demonstrated how suggestion can influence perception and behaviour under controlled conditions.
The climax involved a staged assassination attempt against broadcaster, comedian, and actor Stephen Fry, who was fully aware of the production and participated as part of the controlled experiment.
The participant believed the situation to be genuine and ultimately attempted to carry out the simulated attack after receiving a carefully implanted trigger.
The programme also explored the possibility that the participant could have only limited conscious recollection of his actions immediately afterwards.
Although presented as entertainment, The Assassin prompted wider discussion about the power of hypnosis, conditioning, authority, and social influence.
Brown has consistently maintained that his work combines psychological principles with theatrical techniques and should not be viewed as evidence that hypnosis alone can compel someone to commit acts completely against their core values.
Nevertheless, the programme serves as a compelling illustration of how context, suggestion, expectation, and behavioural conditioning can influence human decision-making in ways that many people find surprising.
Rather than claiming to prove the existence of “mind control,” The Assassin invites viewers to consider how susceptible human behaviour may be to psychological influence under highly structured and carefully engineered circumstances.
That said, in January 2021 I interviewed the Late Tom Silver an American Hypnotist who was engaged to make a USA based version of Derren’s “Assassin” which was entitled “Brainwashed To Kill” and was broadcast on the Discovery Channel.
We talk about that show and the TRUE REALITY that yes indeed Hypnosis and Psychological Influence techniques can indeed be used to covertly manipulate people into doing things against their moral code & values & without their conscious knowledge or consent!
In short I have no doubts whatsoever that Hypnosis & Suggestion techniques can be used in conjunction with other Psychological Manipulation techniques to turn people into Mind Controlled Assassins

TRANCE Formation of America is a book by an MK-Ultra Victim named Cathy O Brien and it was released in 1995 after the 1947 National Security Act was invoked to censor this testimony from the US Congressional Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Oversight.
Today TRANCE, now in its 16th English edition, is referenced in major universities and is in law libraries worldwide due to its continued relevance to global events. Knowledge is our first line of defence against mind control, and this book is indeed the truth that makes us free.

The Psychology of Influence: When Persuasion Becomes Manipulation
Human communication is about far more than the words we speak. Tone of voice, body language, emotional cues, repetition, authority, rapport, and social pressure all influence how people think, feel, and make decisions.
While these psychological principles are often used ethically in education, therapy, leadership, and sales, they can also be exploited by individuals with malicious intent.
Techniques sometimes described as covert hypnosis or conversational hypnosis involve using language patterns, storytelling, suggestion, pacing, leading, and rapport-building to influence another person’s thoughts or emotional state without drawing attention to the process.
Although many dramatic claims made about these techniques lack strong scientific support, skilled communicators can nevertheless use suggestion and psychological framing to increase their persuasive power.
Similarly, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) was developed in the 1970s as a model of communication and behavioural change. While aspects of NLP have become popular in business, coaching, and self-development, many of its specific claims have not been consistently supported by scientific research.
Even so, some of its communication techniques—such as mirroring body language, matching speech patterns, reframing situations, and establishing rapport—are based on broader psychological principles that can influence social interactions.
Body language itself can also play an important role in persuasion. Eye contact, posture, gestures, facial expressions, proximity, and vocal delivery all contribute to how trustworthy, confident, or authoritative a person appears. Individuals seeking to manipulate others may deliberately use these non-verbal signals to create false trust, project confidence, or encourage compliance.
Those with harmful intentions rarely rely on a single technique. Instead, manipulation often involves a combination of psychological principles, including authority, social proof, reciprocity, repetition, fear, urgency, emotional conditioning, isolation, reward and punishment, and the gradual escalation of commitment.
These methods are commonly observed in abusive relationships, high-control groups, financial scams, coercive interrogations, and some forms of political or commercial persuasion.
Contrary to popular fiction, there is little credible evidence that hypnosis alone can compel an unwilling person to act completely against their deeply held moral values.
However, psychological influence can become far more powerful when multiple techniques are combined over time (especially when Hypnosis is part of the equation) particularly if a person is emotionally vulnerable, socially isolated, deprived of sleep, subjected to constant messaging, or placed under sustained stress.
Perhaps the greatest lesson from psychology is that influence is a normal part of everyday life. Advertising, political campaigning, social media, public relations, negotiation, and leadership all rely on understanding human behaviour.
The distinction lies not in whether influence is being used, but whether it respects an individual’s ability to make informed, voluntary decisions.
Recognising the principles of persuasion and manipulation is one of the most effective ways to protect ourselves from those who would seek to exploit them for personal, political, or ideological gain.

Project Mockingbird: Media Influence and an Enduring Controversy
Project Mockingbird is the name commonly associated with a covert CIA effort during the early Cold War to cultivate relationships with journalists, editors, and media organisations in order to influence public opinion and shape the flow of information.
Although many details remain disputed, declassified records and congressional investigations have confirmed that the CIA maintained extensive contacts within the American and international press throughout the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s.
The programme emerged from a period of intense geopolitical rivalry with the Soviet Union, when intelligence agencies viewed information as a strategic weapon.
The CIA recruited journalists, funded publications, and supported cultural organisations that could promote narratives favourable to U.S. foreign policy while countering Soviet propaganda.
Some reporters knowingly cooperated with the agency, while others have been alleged to have been used without fully understanding the extent of the intelligence community’s involvement.
Public awareness of these activities grew dramatically during the 1970s following investigations by the U.S. Congress, including the Church Committee, alongside reporting by journalists who uncovered the CIA’s extensive relationships with major news organisations.
These investigations prompted reforms intended to limit the agency’s domestic activities and improve oversight of intelligence operations.
Despite those reforms, Project Mockingbird remains the subject of continuing debate.
Some researchers and commentators argue that the programme never truly ended but instead evolved into more sophisticated methods of influencing public opinion through strategic communications, public diplomacy, partnerships with private organisations, and the modern information environment.
Others contend that while governments undoubtedly continue to engage in information operations, there is no publicly available evidence that the original Project Mockingbird still exists as an active CIA programme under that name.
What is beyond dispute is that influence over information has become an increasingly important aspect of modern geopolitics. Intelligence agencies, governments, military organisations, corporations, and political campaigns all seek to shape public perception through traditional media, digital platforms, social media, and targeted messaging.
As a result, concerns about propaganda, disinformation, algorithmic influence, and coordinated information campaigns remain highly relevant today.
Whether viewed as a historical CIA operation or as the precursor to modern information warfare, Project Mockingbird continues to serve as a reminder that control over information can be as strategically valuable as control over territory, and that the battle to influence public opinion is an enduring feature of political and intelligence activity.
My the two volumes of my encyclopaedic book’s “IMPOSTER” subtitled “Rupert Murdoch’s Fake Sheikh Mazher Mahmood Exposed” go into great depth about how large sections of the Main-stream (or lame-stream) media have little if any regards for the truth and what is legal, right and/or proper.
In 1993 to 1998 inclusive I spent Six Years as “Britain’s Biggest Ever Media Prankster”
It was during a six-year stint from 1993 to 1998 that Mind Magician Alex Smith also known as Celebrity Hypnotist Jonathan Royle would become known across the UK as Britain’s biggest media prankster.
Using fake personas, outlandish backstories, and clever disguises, he infiltrated radio shows, chat shows, and newspapers, not for fame, but to expose how easily the press could be manipulated. It was satire as protest, and in hindsight, a prophetic warning.
In a bold attempt to unmask Mazher Mahmood and the shady tactics of News of the World, Royle orchestrated a sting of his own. But it backfired spectacularly. Instead of revealing the truth, he found himself convicted and jailed for delivering counterfeit coins in a setup now widely questioned.
“I was trying to expose corruption,” Royle says. “Instead, I became its victim.”
Years later, the same journalist, Mahmood, would be exposed for using illegal phone hacking, manipulated evidence, and perjury to secure convictions against celebrities, professionals, and ordinary people. Royle’s story was just one of many. But unlike most, he hasn’t stayed quiet.
Since that conviction, Jonathan Royle has dedicated nearly three decades to fighting for accountability. In 2022, he filed a formal legal claim against News Group Newspapers (NGN) as part of the Mobile Telephone Voicemail Interception Litigation (MTVIL), seeking to hold them accountable for decades of unlawful activity.
In 2024, NGN effectively weaponised a Part 36 Settlement offer in order to stop Royle from being able to present all his evidence against them for the Courts Judge to officially rule on. Under British Law he had no chance but to settle as if the accused (NGN) offers to pay the claimant (Royle) more than a Judge would likely award them if the matter proceeded to court, then even when Royle had won, he would if awarded even one penny less than the Part 36 Offer NGN had previously made become liable for all of his own and also all of their legal costs which could have run into many millions which he and indeed no other previous claimants have been in a position to afford.
To date NGN have spent well over One Billion Pounds to effectively try and silence the victims who have made claims against them.
Then, in March 2025, something remarkable happened: a private written apology arrived from NGN. A crack in the armour of an empire built on deceit.
But Royle wasn’t done. He published a public request to the Police, CPS, Attorney General, and Secretary of State for Justice, calling for full disclosure of information relating to collapsed court cases tied to Mahmood’s corruption.
“Had the Police and CPS disclosed what they knew about Mahmood as early as 1994,” Royle insists, “it’s highly likely that myself and others would never have gone to trial, let alone to prison.”
