Now better known as Jonathan Royle Hypnotist, I made my stage debut aged 3 and a bit as Flap the Clown on Gandey’s Circus with my Dad Tizzy the Clown
It perhaps then is no surprise that many of my acts over the past fast approaching five decades have involved Comedy in various ways often combined with my Magical & Mind Reading talents in a similar manner to those featured in the video at top of page.
From an early age I would watch the Late Paul Daniel’s perform his own brand of Comedy Magic on Television
And over the years I was fortunate to receive from an early age onwards much invaluable in person advice from Paul on the numerous occasions that we met
Also from the Mid to late 80’s Comedy Magician Wayne Dobson was making a big name for himself on British Television and I am proud to say that he gave me very positive feedback on my version of his “Exchange Trick” better known in Magic Circles as the “S*X Trick” which I perform towards the end of the video at the top of this page.
Needless to say I also studied everything that Wayne Dobson ever released with great interest as I am always looking at ways to improve my acts and performances

My other great influence and comedy inspiration was the Late and Great Bob Monkhouse who I know considered Wayne Dobson to be one of the greatest Comedy Variety Acts on the circuit.
Growing up I also met on regular occasions in person at Blackpool’s “House of Secrets” Magic Shop (which was run by the late Bill Thompson) a legend of the Comedy Magic World namely the Late Joe Riding.
I also recall buying his book “Complete Comedy Technique for Magician’s” and all of the Comedy Magic Routine manuscripts and various “Gag Sequences” booklets that he put out full of hilarious one liner jokes many of which I used in my acts for decades.

Joe also very kindly gave me advice on how to refine the Comedy in my act to make it funnier after he had watched me performing in the “Star-Trail” Talent Contest at Blackpool’s “Talk of the Coast” Cabaret Show-bar which is part of the Viking Hotel.
I also remember that some months before he sadly passed in 2005 that I was booked to do a Comedy Stage Hypnosis Show at a Social Club in Lytham St. Annes near Blackpool for a Military Party and I invited Joe Riding along as my guest.
I’m extremely Proud to say he enjoyed what he saw and complimented me greatly after the show saying how well I had handled such an at the start rowdy & unruly audience and won them over to being a great responsive audience.
Starting in my early teens I would often perform an act of Comedy Magic Tricks, Comical Mind Reading, Juggling and Fire Eating in local Working Men’s & Social Clubs…
Yes indeed it was a very different time and different world back then in the very early 80’s & into the early 90’s…
One of my first ever performances on the so called “Alternative Comedy Club Scene” as it was referred to back then was in around 1992 when still only aged 16 I took part in a Comedy Variety Show at Manchester University Student’s Union which was organised and promoted by by Alex Hardee and his at the time company of “Ha Ha Hardee Arts”
At this show I well remember being one of the warm up acts for a truly talented Comedian named Logan Murray,
Logan did a Comedy double act with Comedian & Magician Jerry Sadowitz but on this occasion he was doing a Solo performance

Also in Circa 1991/1992 as best as I can recall I entered The City Life Comedian of the Year Competition…
By entered that meant I sent in an audio cassette of my routine and if chosen I would then be asked to perform at a live “in person” heat
I remember having written material about Rolf Harris being a very strange man and hinting at him being a Paedophile (despite it not being in the public domain back then that he was such a sex offender) with jokes about his songs & their lyrics such as “Two Little Boys had two little Toys”, “Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport” and also making fun of the strange sounds he made using his body parts at the start of Children’s TV Show “Rolf’s Cartoon Club”
I vaguely recall one of the punchlines being if that’s what he sounds like when doing the Cartoon Club intro music imagine what he must sound like when he is having a wank!
Anyhow I don’t think the world of “Alternative Comedy” was ready for such controversial material back then and perhaps as such it is no surprise that I received only a “thanks for applying but why not try again next year” response.
I never entered again, but many other people did and many of them became Extremely Famous Names in the Comedy World…
Circa 1992 and I played the part of “Mr. Magic” a Comedy Jester type character in a production of the Pantomime “Jack and the Beanstalk”
My next really memorable “Alternative” Comedy club experience was in 1993 when I contacted a man named Wilf who performed under the name AGRAMAN, the Human Anagram.
He ran a Comedy Club at The Southern Public House in Chorlton every Thursday night and I managed to persuade him to let me do an open spot
It turned out the night he gave me was to be one of the “Support acts” for Headliner Lee Evan’s and the other 2 acts on the bill would be Sue Beard and Dave Gorman
And yes by Lee Evan’s I do mean the Comedy Super-Star and the same Lee Evans who in 1992 had been the warm up act for many of the shows in Magician & Illusionist Simon Drakes “Secret Cabaret” Live UK Tour to which myself & Magician’s Jamie Allan & David Arkay supplied Simon with our version of the Impaled Illusion as is explained on my webpage at - https://www.magicalguru.com/royle-magician-magic-shows-lectures/

In around early to mid 1994, a DJ & Comedy Performer whose real name was Steve Miller but he performed under the name “Mickey Love” was becoming something of a Comedy Cult Sensation in the North West of England with his hilarious parody and piss take of Television Game Shows which he called “The Golden Wheel of Destiny”
In the show he was assisted by Eddie Klejdys who in drag acted as the comical game show assistant “Anitia”
It turned out that I had met Eddie Klejdys some years earlier in Circa 1990 when he had recorded me doing a “Contacting the dead” Stage Clairvoyance show at a Public House in Oldham around the time “Psychic News” were proclaiming me to be the real deal as explained on my blog page here -

I also discovered some time later that Eddie Klejdys was related to (Brother I think) a man named Henry Klejdys who worked on the production team of Peter Kay’s “Phoenix Nights” back in 2001.
Anyhow in 1993 I taught Hypnosis to Steve Miller and successfully did a number of shows in North West Yate’s Wine Lodges & other venues which he presented and advertised under the name of “MickNoTism”
His Comedy Game Show “The Golden Wheel of Destiny” gained such a cult following that Channel Four heard about it and filmed (at Rochdale’s Yates Wine Lodge) one of the shows in order to show footage on a Channel Four Television show called “Scrimpers”
A couple of weeks after that footage was filmed, Steve & Eddie had a disagreement and Eddie left “The Golden Wheel of Destiny” which prompted Steve Miller to ask me if I’d like to join him in the show, something I did for a few months of several shows each week all over Greater Manchester, Yorkshire & North West of England.
It was for these shows that my half Vicar and half transvestite comedy character Vicar Two-Shoes (originally it was Father Forward and then I changed it) was originally developed.
However with a tag line of “I suppose a Flock’s out of the Question” my Top half Vicar and Bottom Half Transvestite in mini skirt, tights & high heels character also did some Solo Comedy Hypnosis Shows at a later date as well.,
These shows relied on me to push the limits of my improvisational “Whose Line is it anyway” Style Comedy Skills to the limits and I learnt so much from doing them.
On a side note I am absolutely convinced that our “Kiss the Chicken” game as seen on the wheel image above was the inspiration for the “Dove from above” that appeared in Vic Reeves & Bob Mortimers “Shooting Stars” Television Comedy Game show.
Indeed such was the Surrealism & improvised madness of many elements of “The Golden Wheel of Destiny” I truly do believe that the various TV researchers who came to see Steve Miller’s show were at the very least inspired by his content in terms of what later appeared in Vic & Bob’s “Shooting Stars” show.
I first performed my Stand Up Comedy & Magic Act with Comedy Legend and now Family friend Jimmy Cricket back in early 1998 and was lucky enough to be invited to his 60th Birthday celebration whose attendees were like a “Who’s Who” of the Comedy & Variety Entertainment Industry.
Since then I have performed with him on numerous occasions as well as acting as a Comedy adviser and Consultant (based on my Slapstick Clowning background) to him and his son “Frankie Doodle” for a Silent Comedy Film they made upon which my name appears in the credits.
In the 90’s I was also fortunate enough to perform alongside the Drag Legend that was Foo Foo Lammar on numerous occasions at their Manchester venue “Foo’s Foo’s Palace” and as these were often for Hen and/or Stag Party’s adult material was very much the order of the day at these bookings.
In the year 2000 I was out in Rochdale Town Centre with a friend having a few drinks when I walked into Yate’s Wine Lodge and discovered that night they were holding a Regional Heat of The Batchelors Cup-A-Soup Comedy Competition and that the prize was £50 cash for the person who won tonight’s heat.
Well I entered and as I was clearly the only person who had any real world Stand Up Comedy experience not surprisingly I won by a country mile and was £50 better off by the end of the evening.
However I did not win the North-West Regional Final’s as I was most certainly outclassed by the truly hilarious Comedian that is Steve Royle who used to live in Milnrow (near Rochdale where I live) and we both years in fact decades ago now used to see each other every week at “Skylight Circus Arts” where we both went to practice Juggling and other Circus Skills.
I was more than happy that it was Steve Royle that I lost to as he was truly hilarious on the night and I was that particular night getting a distinctly average at best response with my Comedy & Magic.
Circa 2000/2001 I started doing quite a number of Comedy Club Shows with appearances at The Comedy Balloon at Briton’s Protection
It was at The Briton’s Protection where I debuted my unique Comedy Magic Double act, presenting “Jonathan Royle & Al Smith” but with only one person ever being seen by the audience that being me as “Al Smith” my sidekick was invisible or maybe my character just had mental health issues?
It was also a venue where I often appeared on the same line up as fellow Comedy Magician Andrew Normansell
In my roles as both Public Relations Officer and also Entertainments Officer for Manchester’s Magic Club & Magical Society for Magician’s & Mind Readers “The Order of the Magi” I book many guest lecturers and along with my experience of working in the real world as a Stand Up Comedian & performer of Comedy Magic I felt qualified to review Andrew’s Lecture on Magic for Comedy Club’s back in 2025

I also appeared at The Frog & Bucket on Oldham Street in Manchester and my bizarre One Person Comedy Double Act idea was really starting to take shape then.
And around the same time I made contact with Agraman (pictured above) The Human Anagram Again and he invited me along to perform again at The Buzz Comedy Club

One particularly memorable (for me) gig was performing at the “Dinner with the Stars” event as part of Dale-Con
The Comedy (and Red Dwarf) Legend that is Hattie Hayridge was one of many famous names in attendance and not only was she one of the nicest people myself, my wife and Daughter Ash have ever met who we had the privilege of being seated on the same table as when dinner was served, but also I am proud to say she told me after my show how much she had enjoyed my Comedy Magic & Mind Reading performance.
Another memory that springs to mind was the time I was doing a lot of Adult’s Only Comedy Stage Hypnosis Shows for Private Stag and/or Hen Night party events and I would often have a Comedian as a warm up act to my show.
Scully (as pictured above and below) was indeed absolutely filthy, it sticks in my mind as I’d heard a rumour at the time that when Roy ”Chubby” Brown was managed by George Forster, his manager had sent someone to “have a word” with Scully after one of his shows for allegedly stealing way too much of Chubby’s original material.

I don’t know how true that rumour was, but in any event I do recall any and every time I worked with Scully, waiting a short while until after he had left the venue so that I would not get caught in the cross fire if he did ever have any “after show visitors”
Some years ago now I was booked on the same show as Comedian Gary Skyner for a Christmas party that was being held in Liverpool for the players of Wigan Athletic Football Team who at the time were playing in the Premier League.
Gary Skyner is recognized as one of the UK’s most beloved comedians, having built a successful career over more than 25 years. He is notably the second child in the UK to be born affected by the thalidomide drug, which was administered to pregnant women in the 1960s.
Despite the challenges posed by his condition, Gary has turned his life experiences into a source of inspiration and humor, proving that adversity can be overcome
It sticks in my mind so much because not only was Gary (as always) truly hilarious and I learnt so much about Comedy from observing him as I have done all the Comedian’s I have been fortunate enough to see perform (or even more fortunate to work alongside over the decades) but also because of what happened just after he left.
You see after Gary had performed, acting both as the “Top of the Bill” Adults Only Comedy Stage Hypnotist and also as the Comedian/Compere for the event, I had to introduce the Female Strippers to perform their acts.
I’ll just says that if the “News of the World” had got photographs of what a couple of those Wigan Athletic players got up to with the two strippers it would have easily made front page news and no doubt a multi page feature spread inside.

Two FA Trophy victories at Wembley and then promotion to the Football League were their rewards. But out of all the star names to don the famous blue shirt in that great era, none was more colourful than striker Dennis Greene as you’ll discover on Wycombe Sound’s Wanderers Show this Thursday (7pm).
Trouble was, Dennis couldn’t decide whether to be a footballer or an entertainer. He used to be a fully paid-up member of the Magic Circle. It was something he did for fun back in his 20s, when he also tried his hand as a stand-up comic.
However, the man from Bethnal Green was told to give up his stage career by Martin O’Neill.
Well I remember clearly Dennis Greene performing his Stand-Up Comedy Act as a Warm Up to my Adult’s Only Comedy Stage Hypnosis Show when I was doing a residency at “The London Bus Emporium” nightclub in High Wycombe in early 1993.
Indeed over several nights he brought along pretty much all of the Wycombe Wanderers players and some of their friends as well and many of them ended up Hypnotized and on stage taking part in my “Erotic-Hypnotics” Show.
In February 2024 I performed at The Blackpool Royal British Legion Club with my Stand Up Comedy Magic Act as part of a Charity Show raising funds for Trinity Hospice which was being presented also as a tribute to The Late Magician, Singer & Entertainer Carl De Rome who had been a friend of mine and the other performers who took part for many years.
The show was organised by Peter Young who in Circa 1993 had run an Agency Called “Stardome Entertainments” in Oldham through which I had been booked to perform as a Comedy Stage Hypnotist on a number of occasions
And one of the acts on the bill with us was the hilarious Adults Only Comedian who regularly appears as the Warm up act for Jim Davidson, namely Blackpool Comedy Legend Ricky Lane
I feel extremely lucky to have been on the same bill (usually also alongside 2 strippers and then me doing my Adults Only Comedy Stage Hypnosis Show) during the Mid to Late 90’s as the Late Comedy Legend himself Mr. Bernard Manning.
And I can tell you that Ricky Lane does by far the most authentic tribute to Bernard Manning that you could ever see..
